Austnes Salmon Lodge sits near Østnesfossen on the Verdalselva, close to Vuku in Verdal, Trøndelag. Trondheim Airport, Værnes is about 80 km away, roughly one hour by road. There is also a rail option to Verdal, followed by a short onward transfer of about 20 km.

Austnes stands out because the week is built around a small number of rods, varied water, direct host contact and cabins right by the river. The current Austnes pages lean hard into space, calm, rhythm and low pressure, while Austnes-related package pages focus on several distinct zones, light guiding and the freedom to fish independently. This is not a crowded lodge built around volume. It is a lodge for anglers who value access, peace and real river time.

Austnes is low-pressure and access is strong, but the honest answer is not “every metre is fully private.” The Austnes beat page states that the south shore of Zone 1 is open to licence buyers, while Austnes guests still fish it as part of the package, and the first 50 metres below the waterfall is not open to fishing. Austnes-related sales pages also note that most of the water is arranged for lodge guests, but Zone 1 at Østnesfossen is a special case.

Austnes is not a place to sell fantasy numbers. It is a place with a real chance of a strong salmon and enough bigger fish to keep serious anglers interested. Austnes-related pages describe average fish around 14 lb, another Austnes sales page describes Verdalselva fish averaging about 4 to 5 kg with fish to around 20 kg, and early June is repeatedly described as the period when truly big fresh salmon are most likely to show.

The water is varied, not one-dimensional. The Austnes beat page describes big rocks, deep pools, quiet parts and streams, and it notes that some sections are easy and forgiving while other sections reward stronger Spey casting because of bank vegetation. That makes Austnes a good fit for anglers who want both comfortable fishing water and some more technical sections in the same week.

For Verdalselva, the most useful starting point is a double-handed rod of about 12 to 15 feet in line classes 8 to 11. In lower summer water, a 9 to 10 foot single-hander for line classes 7 to 8 also makes sense. That spread covers the river well and gives you room to adjust to both bigger early-season water and lower mid-season conditions

In Norway, salmon anglers aged 18 or over must pay the national fishing fee. In addition, river fishing requires the local fishing permit or river card for the water you fish. The Norwegian Environment Agency states that proof of the national fee must be carried while fishing, and Austnes states that the fishing licence is not valid without the fishing fee and a disinfection certificate.

Before you fish in Norwegian rivers, including the Verdalselva, all fishing gear must be disinfected.
This rule helps protect wild salmon stocks from harmful parasites and diseases, especially Gyrodactylus salaris, which can be carried from one river to another on waders, boots, nets, and other equipment.
At Austnes, there is no need to worry about the practical side of this.
We are happy to help, and we will arrange the disinfection for you so everything is done properly before you enter the river.

Expect a conservative regime. The current Verdalselva rules shown by Elveguiden list a daily quota of one killed salmon and two released salmon, and Austnes-related rules describe a season bag limit focused on smaller salmon under 65 cm, with larger salmon released and all sea trout released. In practice, Austnes reads as a release-minded fishery with limited harvest, not a place for heavy killing.
