Z o n e 8
Zone 8, Breding, is located 18 km from the estuary and is the second Austnes beat the salmon meet on their way up the river. It lies on the north side and is within walking distance from camp.
The beat has three fine pools from top to bottom, all fishable at all water levels.

The magic of Breding is how close and complete it feels. You can walk from camp to a 600-metre salmon beat with holding pools, stones and natural stopping places.
It is practical, beautiful and serious fishing water at the same time.

Breding is a north-bank beat with three distinct pools. From the top down, the water gives anglers repeated chances to cover salmon that are moving and resting.
The beat is compact enough to understand, but varied enough to fish thoughtfully through a full session.

Salmon hold in Breding because the pools and rocks create natural stopping places. After travelling from the estuary and through the lower river, fish meet structure that lets them pause.
The holding water is easy to believe in: pools, stones, softer current and defined lies.

Breding can be fished throughout the day, but early and late sessions are especially valuable because the beat is close to camp and easy to approach quietly.
Fresh-running fish can stop here at any time, so confidence matters from the first cast.

The PDF guide is clear: Breding is fishable at all water levels. The pools hold shape in both higher and lower water, and the stones continue to create shelter.
Adapt fly, angle and depth to the river, but do not write the beat off because conditions change.

Fish Breding from the top down and treat each pool as its own opportunity. Start short, cover the near lies, then lengthen the cast as the pool opens.
Because the beat is close and accessible, it is tempting to hurry. Do the opposite: fish it carefully.

The key holding water is found in the three pools, around the rocks and in the softer current immediately below structure.
Look for places where a travelling salmon can stop without leaving the main line of movement.

Use clean, simple salmon fishing: controlled angle, steady swing and measured steps. Let the fly work through each pool before changing too much.
If the water is high, favour the softer edges. If it is low, reduce disturbance and fish with finesse.

Breding sits opposite the camp and has always been a natural part of the Austnes rhythm. It is close enough for a short focused session, but strong enough for a serious fishing day.
The beat’s identity is simple: accessible water with real salmon stopping power.

Zone 8 has real big salmon potential because it is one of the first proper stopping beats fish meet on the way up the river.
A salmon that pauses in one of these pools may be fresh, strong and ready to use the current.

Fish only permitted lodge water from the north side and follow all current river regulations. Rotate with other anglers and give each pool enough space.
Even though access is easy, wade carefully around stones and pool edges.

Breding is one of the most practical Austnes zones: 600 metres, walking distance from camp and fishable at all water levels.
It is perfect for focused sessions when you want to be on good water quickly without losing the feeling of proper salmon fishing.
